Home Security: The Essentials

You want to keep your home as safe as possible to protect your belongings and your family. You need to protect it from external dangers like burglars and from internal dangers like fire and gas leaks. There are many home security devices on the market today which you can use to help you keep your home and family safe and secure.

Home Security Alarm Systems

An alarm system of some sort is essential to your home's security. There are many different types available which cover a wide range of prices, so to start, you should determine what your home security budget will be. Inexpensive alarms can be placed on doors which will set off a siren when your door is opened without proper authorization. More expensive home security systems include motion detectors inside and outside your home along with video surveillance equipment.

To enhance your alarm system, you can register it with a monitoring service such as ADT. Then when one of your alarms is tripped, the signal is transmitted to the monitoring service. The service will attempt to contact you to determine if it is a false alarm or a real emergency. If they are unable to verify that you have a false alarm, the company will go ahead and notify the police. This makes an alarm monitoring service an important aspect of your home's security if your house is left unattended for long periods of time.

Home Security For Inside Dangers

To adequately protect your family, you will need to devise a home security plan for dealing with internal dangers such as gas leaks, electrical shortages, and fire. You can do this by installing a carbon monoxide detector, fire detector, and natural gas detector. Make sure you keep the batteries working and check them at least once a year. Have readily available fire extinguishers mounted in your home and always remember to turn off all electric or gas appliances when they are not being used.

Home Security Tip: Your House Should always Look Occupied

Most burglary attempts will happen when homeowners are away, so one of the best thing you can do to deter thieves is to keep your home looking occupied. Do this by installing automated lights which turn off and on at various times. Place your newspaper box and mailbox away from view of the street. If you will be away from home for a few days, place your mail and newspaper delivery on hold or have your neighbors to pick them up for you so they don't accumulate at your front door. You may want to hire a house sitter to visit your house during the day or stay overnight for extra security.

Join Your Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood watch programs have proven to be effective in decreasing crime. You will take turns with your neighbors in patrolling the neighborhood and watching over each other's houses. All residents of your neighborhood are trained to be alert to unusual activity.

You can see that there are many things you can do to increase your level of home security. Even if your budget is tight, you can find free or inexpensive ways to protect your home. Which method you choose will depend upon your budget and the level of protection that your property needs.
