Home Security: Motion Detectors
Motion detectors are very useful for home security. They have become very advance and you will find quite a variety of styles and prices to choose from. For example one type of motion detector is the infrared variety which is able to detect the infrared radiation which is emitted by humans. Another motion detector uses ultrasonic waves in order to detect movement. Yet another type emits a beam of light which will activate an alarm when the light beam is broken as when happens when someone walks in front of it.
Motion detectors are often used along with an alarm system for protecting the entire home. These detectors can be placed outside as well as inside of the house. When the motion detector senses movement by whatever means it uses, an alarm will sound. If you choose to protect your home with an alarm monitoring service, then this alarm is also sent to the monitoring service who will contact you and notify the police if need be.
Motion detectors can be well hidden because they do not require a direct power source. Older or less expensive models use batteries. If you have one of these, you must check your batteries often to ensure that your detectors are working properly. The newer motion detectors are wireless, so you don't need to worry about battery failure with those.
Video surveillance cameras also rely upon motion detectors. The technology works the same way, but when the alarm is sounded, a video monitoring device is triggered also. This prevents the need for continuous video recording and huge storage space. The video only records when motion is detected.
Another use for motion detectors is with outdoor lighting systems. When movement is detected, instead of an alarm sounding, lights come one. This acts to deter unwelcome intruders and also helps to light your walkway and entrance when you come home at night.
You can have your motion detectors installed by a professional as part of your overall home security system, or you can save cost and install them yourself. Installing them yourself isn't too difficult, just be sure to follow the directions so they work properly and won't be trigger too easily or not at all. The most difficult part about installing them might be in determining their placement. If they are too low, then they might be triggered by your pet but if they are too high then an intruder might be able to crawl under them. Also be sure to follow the maintenance guideline such as changing your batteries often so your detectors will be ready to work when you need them to.
Motion detectors are an important part of home security and you should consider working them into your budget. There are many types you can choose from, some are not that expensive. You can select detectors that are triggered to sound an alarm, bark like a dog, or emit a light. You are sure to find one just right for you if you shop around.
