Home Security: Fire Safety

Fire safety is an important consideration when it comes to home security because a fire can threaten your life or a life of a loved one. To keep your home and family safe you should develop a fire safety plan that will help you to prevent fires, detect and escape them.

Protect your home with fire insurance

You must ensure that you have your home adequately covered with insurance which includes fire protection coverage. If the unthinkable occurs and you lose your home to a fire, you could be left homeless and in a very tough position if you have no insurance money to help you rebuild. Your family's safety is of the utmost importance. You may lose your possessions, but with insurance they can be replaced fairly quickly.

If you have valuables in your home such as rare art or jewelry, then you may need to take out separate insurance policies on those items since they may fall outside of the cap of your home insurance limit.

If you are buying a home, fire protection will probably be required in order to obtain a mortgage and it may even be included in your monthly house payment. In order to qualify for fire insurance, you may have to install fire alarm sensors.

Install fire/smoke alarms

Your home needs smoke detectors. They could save your life. Make sure they are installed properly and the batteries are fresh. If you are at home when a fire breaks out, the alarm will alert you to a possible fire. Your family should be trained to vacate the home when the alarm goes off whether there is a fire or not. You can then search for the source of the smoke and take care of the problem unless it has grown beyond your control in which case you can dial 911 for help.

For enhanced security, you can utilize an alarm monitoring company which will immediately be notified when your fire alarm goes off. They can call the fire department for you if you are not at home.

Practice fire prevention

Be sure to turn off your electric and gas appliances when you are not using them. Repair faulty wiring immediately. Don't leave your home with appliances running such as an oven, iron, or grill. Don't smoke in your bed. It is best to restrict your smoking to outside if at all possible. Avoid using space heaters unless absolutely necessary and then be extremely cautious as these appliances are notorious for starting fires. Take precautions with Christmas lights, especially those strung on a dry tree.

Practice an escape plan

If a fire ever does break out in your home, the most important thing above all else is that your family escapes unharmed. You can help ensure this by establishing and then practicing an escape plan so that every member of the family knows exactly what to do when they hear the fire alarm go off.

Fire prevention and detection is a very important part of home security. Make sure you have properly installed and functioning smoke detectors, and that each member of your family knows how to evacuate when the alarm sounds.
